From the weak nations’ point of view, it is better if there are many powerful countries then if there are just a few. The more concentrated is power, the fewer opportunities there are to move. Space for change, space for freedom to implement change is then very narrow; very small.
-Eduardo Galeano-
The method of identifying the most powerful nations in the globe is trickier than it first appears. Power can take many different forms, including influence in politics, the military, the economy, and culture. The world’s most powerful countries set foreign policies that have an international impact, maintain a potent military, and drive global economic trends. In its yearly Best Countries rankings, U.S. News and World Report, in collaboration with BAV Group and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, lists the most powerful nations in the world. In the 2021 report, more than 20,000 respondents were asked to rank 80 countries according to five criteria: leadership, political clout, economic clout, military partnerships, and international alliances.
